Helix TWT

e2v has extensive expertise in the design and manufacture of high quality helix TWTs (travelling wave tubes), producing the first glass tube devices in the 1950s before progressing to the production of metal/ceramic tubes a decade later. These rugged and compact designs have since become the market leaders. e2v now supplies to both commercial and military markets.

We specialise in developing tailor-made products to satisfy the specific requirements of our customers. Our engineers draw upon world-class facilities and decades of technical knowledge, while using the most advanced TWT simulation tools.

Our range of helix TWT products covers both commercial and military applications:

  • Satellite uplinks - our long life compact designs are suitable for both static and mobile units, in X, Ku, DBS, and Ka bands, at powers up to 500W.
  • ECM - our broadband devices, incorporating Multiple Collectors, have been proven at localised temperatures of over 250 degrees C and can withstand very high levels of shock and vibration. The product range includes multi-octave bandwidth (e.g. 4.5 to 18 GHz) tubes at average power levels of 100, 200, and 300W. Packaging variants include full protection, unpackaged and special versions configured for towed decoy use.
  • Radar - we have developed a unique technology that has been introduced to a Dual-Mode X-band helix TWT, providing both high PRF operation with low noise under vibration and CW, and can be used in more conventional radar tubes in C and X band.
  • Laboratory units - the combination of bandwidth and long life makes our ECM tubes ideal for laboratory applications such as EMC testing.

Inductive Output Tubes (IOTs and ESCIOTs)

e2v is a world leading supplier of a wide range of plug-in and build-up Inductive Output Tubes (IOTs) and their high efficiency versions, the Energy Saving IOT (ESCIOT®).  which are used as the final amplifier stage in UHF television transmitters and more recently in high power scientific power supplies.

IOT technology is a highly cost-effective solution for analogue television transmitters over 10kW peak sync and digital transmitters over 5kW average power.

Whilst an IOT powered television transmitter will consume typically 50% of the power of a klystron transmitter they usually replace. Tests have proved that the ESCIOT® offers ever greater savings, being 40-50% more efficient than an IOT in both analogue and digital service. The graph below illustrates the substantially improved efficiency levels experienced with the e2v ESCIOT® in comparison to an IOT:

The final choice of whether to use a conventional IOT or an ESCIOT® comes down to a calculation comparing the saving in electricity consumption to the additional cost of the transmitter system.

The graph below compares the cost of running a 30kW average digital power transmitter, over a 20 year period, of replacement tubes (assuming 30,000 hours life), and electricity costs, against varying costs of electricity per hour.

As you would expect, the savings achievable with an ESCIOT® powered transmitter are based on efficiency and so increase linearly with electricity cost.

Klystrons

e2v klystrons are in use worldwide in analogue television transmitters and will fit most transmitter types.  The range consists of pulsed wideband types. Although now replaced in new transmitters by IOTs and their even higher efficiency versions, ESCIOTs, they are still used globally for spares to keep analogue services running.

More recently Klystrons have been used in high power supplies for Scientific establishments, specificaly in the High Energy Physics arena.

Magnetrons

e2v is the world's largest manufacturer of pulse magnetrons anda world leader in magnetron technology. Its product capabilities range in frequency from 1GHz to 95GHz at powers from 1.5kW to 6MW and encompass a wide range of anode, cathode and tuning technologies, dependent upon the application.

The company has been manufacturing magnetrons, established under the EEV brand, for several decades. e2v aims to meet the stringent specifications for the military market, the power, long life and low running costs for industry and medicine, and to achieve the price performance requirements for the highly competitive marine and airborne radar markets.

In 2003, e2v won a Queen's Award in the International Trade category for its low-power linear accelerator (LINAC) magnetrons, which provide the vital microwave energy in radiotherapy machines. In 2004, e2v was presented with a Queen's Award for Innovation for its fast tune magnetron.

e2v recently launched its new MG6090 series of magnetrons to the market. The tunable S-band MG6090 has been developed in direct response to customer requirements, and has been designed specifically for radiotherapy linear accelerator use.

Modulators

e2v offers a range of compact modulator systems based around its patented solid-state switching technology. High power pulsed systems are developed for radar and for linear accelerators used in industrial, scientific and medical applications.

The compact modulator is a direct switching unit, designed to drive either e2v's microwave tubes or those from other manufacturers. The high voltage modulators and semiconductor switches provide a real proven alternative to conventional “line and hard valve type” modulator technology. Using innovative assemblies of solid-state switches, together with compatible power supplies and energy storage units, gives a significant improvement in pulse shape and quality. A flexible control system gives the ability to remotely vary the pulse parameters on a pulse-to-pulse basis. These features make the units ideal for systems where precise energy control is essential.

e2v's MTP5838 and MPT5839 modulator systems are designed for medical radiotherapy LINAC use. When combined with an e2v magnetron, a reliable, high energy, pulsed microwave source for electron acceleration is provided.

Product Features

  • Compact design  -ideal when space is limited
  • Computer-controlled and detailed diagnostics - a significant advantage for rapid diagnostics, potentially available remotely
  • High-level FRU replacement - enables service by engineers who are not experts in modulator systems
  • Control over many waveform properties - allows accurate dose servoing for a variety of treatment modalities
  • Self-shielded - does not require large RF enclosure
  • Far fewer exposed high voltage components - safer for service operations
  • Lower RF noise emissions relative to line modulator - more suitable for environment with other sensitive electronics and easier to comply with IEC requirements

Control Interface

The modulator system can be controlled and monitored by the use of the RS485 serial bus interface or the hard wired user interface, or the fibre optic interface.  For a given application a customer can select between these options or e2v can configure and combine them in order to integrate with the host system. The control interface can also be configured so the modulator system operates at a single operating point autonomously.

e2v works closely with customers to provide generic or bespoke modulator system solutions as required. The company prides itself on its exceptional technical support, both during the initial product selection and once products are in service.
